UK Prisons to give YO tablet computers in-cell

I have just been sent a great article (dated 22 June '20), with the announcement that Children in Young Offenders’ Institutions in England are to get tablet computers in their cells!

Potentially, this move could have great benefits to our project, especially if we could get our AR app installed on the devices, for a select few, to extend our pilot process with our AR resources.

Lucy Frazer, the Prisons Minister, did not say what functions the users would be permitted to access, or what security would be in place to prevent the devices from being misused.

The minister added: “In-cell technology, such as tablets and laptops, has the potential to support the rehabilitative work that already takes place in prison by providing in-cell access to education and other rehabilitation opportunities. Our strategy is informed by the 2007 Farmer Report which highlights the needs of providing contact with families and the link between lack of contact and negative impacts on mental health and potential violence.”

Great progress for technology to support and assist young offender learners and potentially learners in all prison institutions!
