Following the Novus staff evaluations at HMP Hewell in Nov/Dec 2020, the project has compiled a detailed evaluation report with the findings. It was fantastic to read that there was 100% positive feedback across the whole evaluation and for each question asked by the staff.
The introductory information and online training session with teachers, trainers and support staff were very beneficial indeed. Only 18% had heard of Augmented Reality, prior to the presentation and ‘hands on’ sessions. All staff found the Tutor Guide produced helpful and easy to follow as well as the guide available for prison learners.
“I think AR is a really exciting learning resource for both the learner and tutor.”
“The interactive element (getting up and doing something) makes the users feel more engaged and more involved with their learning.”
“… an excellent way of introducing ICT into the session, it also encourages independent learning.”
“I have been really impressed by the AR system and truly hope that this Project gains the respect and success it richly deserves.”
After the staff had time to use the iPads and the range of AR resources available, 100% stated ‘that they would use the resources outside the classroom and/or workshop activities’, and 100% would like to Access AR in their working life.
82% would use the iPad in their own time to plan learning.
All staff who took part in the sessions agreed that AR was an exciting learning resource and very flexible and were excited to be provided with the opportunity to trial new technology.
“My first impression was: Why we still don’t have it up and running? This is something that is needed and what is necessary.”
The AR resources and process put the learner at the heart of the learning process this was a clear benefit as understood and reinforced by the staff.
“It certainly kept me engaged… It would certainly keep the prisoners engaged as it is a far more interactive way of learning.”
“It is a brilliant tool to build confidence and encourage learners to take control of their own learning.”
“A resource for a vulnerable learner who as yet prefers to work independently.”
Through post-session discussions and feedback, various teachers and trainers like some of the vocational resources and practical demonstrations (Brickwork, Carpentry, Art), but all like the Mental Health Awareness and Growth Mind-set information resources. These resources can be used to give information and reinforcement on specific topics, where appropriate.
“I enjoyed the Carpentry, it would be really helpful to my learners, it would also help free some time up for me when assessing or answering others questions.”
“To equip Prisoners with clarification and to provide peace of mind I think would be particularly influential for their wellbeing and ability to adjust more efficiently.”
“I particularly like the Growth Mind-set resources… the resources were very high quality.”
“I like the Mental Health: Wellbeing. I know that a lot of residents suffer, but they don’t necessarily want or are ready to discuss it with anyone…… having more knowledge and tools for self-help could be very beneficial in their choices for coping strategies”
When planning the development of the AR resources, the prison induction process was an area identified as much needed and was reinforced by staff who evaluated them in the sessions:
“As its current and great use of technology, it will help them prepare for the real world. It will also give them an insight into what is happening while they are in custody.”
“I really liked the supportive accounts I saw from individuals and believe this would really have an impact on those Prisoners who can access this material on the AR system - especially as the first few days inside Prison is such a whirlwind of events that are hard to digest for numerous reasons and contributory factors.”
We are very pleased with the feedback and reinforces the need for digital technology interventions to support the valuable face to face interactions.
The use of digital technology would certainly have been invaluable during the current Covid-19 pandemic and the lockdown element across all establishments.
