This past Friday, myself and Darryl took part in a Zoom discussion with Sophie Otter (Head of HMPPS Digital Prisons), and Alice Noakes (Product Lead for Prisoner and Family Services).
This was as a direct result of the letter dated 30 June 2020, outlining the work we have been doing to support learning opportunities with young offenders, which was addressed to Prisons Minister Liz Frazer. This gave an opportunity to give a presentation of the work undertaken and future aims and objectives.
Sophie informed that their teams are working on a range of products and services that address the needs of all users of the prison system - staff, offenders as well as their families and friends, and the youth estate is part of our remit. They have been testing the use of in-cell technology at two of the HMPPS prisons and developing content is a key aspect of this work. The team are developing this further as they expand into the four Young Offender Institutions where educational content is particularly important.
The outcomes of the meeting were that they were interested in the range of resources developed and potentially the process with AR. Sophie will discuss the outcomes of the meeting with the digital skills team and will aim to reconvene in December to discuss further.
This was a great outcome and we look forward to future discussions and possible developments where we can potentially use our resources to benefit the offender learners, especially at the young offender institutions and the pilots.
