This week saw a very interesting article from Insidetime ‘Dame Sally Coates criticises prison education’ states:
Of the 31 recommendations in her report, she said: “I would say probably very few have been carried out in full but some in part.”
Dame Sally Coates was the inspiration into our AR prison project and the recommendations she detailed back in 2015/16 show the lack of progress with technology, and prison learning/education.
MPs on the committee decided to investigate prison education after inspection reports by Ofsted pointed to low quality provision, with only nine out of 32 establishments inspected recently found to offer “good” or “outstanding” teaching.
She said that some governors would not even recognise or know the name of their jail’s head of learning and skills. She added: “If we are ever going to change the amount of reoffending that happens in our country, education has to be taken a lot more seriously. Prisoners have to be equipped to be able to enter the workforce and be confident members of society when they leave prison.”
The committee’s final report is expected to include a call for prisoners to get in-cell laptops to help them to study. Dame Sally said: “The biggest thing I would do is provide in-cell technology so people can learn independently. It would have to be in-cell technology alongside a culture where education is valued.”
